Two people have been killed and eight others injured, including two police officers, after a shooting inside a high-rise apartment building in downtown Minneapolis on Wednesday (local time).
Police were called to 15 East Grant Street at about 4.36pm following an initial report of a person being shot. Further emergency calls soon followed, with witnesses reporting additional gunfire.
According to the City of Minneapolis, officers arrived within minutes and entered the building, where they found several victims and continued to hear shots.
Police traced the gunfire to an upper floor but encountered a heavy haze that severely restricted visibility. Three officers were injured during the response, including two who were struck by gunfire.
One officer sustained a gunshot wound to the leg that was not believed to be life-threatening, while a second officer required surgery. A third officer was assessed for an injury that authorities said did not appear to have been caused by gunfire and was also considered non-life-threatening.

Six other people with apparent gunshot wounds were transported to Hennepin Healthcare. One later died in hospital, while another victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities said the suspected shooter was also found dead. Officials have yet to disclose the circumstances of the gunman’s death or release details about the suspect’s identity or a possible motive.
The shooting prompted a major emergency operation near the Minneapolis Convention Center, with large numbers of police, ambulances and armoured vehicles deployed to the area. Authorities asked members of the public to stay away from a substantial section of the downtown district while the scene was secured and investigated.
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz said state authorities were assisting local law enforcement and thanked emergency personnel involved in the response.
