Emily Nutley, a married 43-year-old former counsellor at St. Xavier High School in Cincinnati, was sentenced to three years in prison on Tuesday for sexual battery after pleading guilty to engaging in a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old male student in late 2023.

The relationship, initiated by Nutley through text messages and nude photos, included at least four sexual encounters in her office.

When the teen attempted to end the relationship, Nutley allegedly threatened suicide and paid him to remain silent.

The student’s disclosure to his parents on October 7, 2024, led to Nutley’s termination from the school following an internal investigation.

Despite the defense highlighting Nutley’s mental health struggles, alcohol abuse, and past trauma, prosecutors compared her actions to those of a predator, stressing the lasting impact on the victim.

Nutley must now register as a Tier 3 sex offender for life.

  1. If it were a man, sentence starting point would be 20 years to life. The two-tiered gender system never ceases to amaze anyone.
