Engineers propose ‘crash-proof’ plane with giant AI-activated airbags

Two engineering students from Dubai’s Birla Institute of Technology and Science have unveiled a radical “crash-proof” plane concept, inspired by the tragic Air India crash that killed 260 people in June.

Their design, called ‘Project Rebirth’, proposes using AI to detect unavoidable crashes and automatically deploy massive external airbags along the aircraft’s nose, belly and tail, alongside impact-absorbing fluids and reverse thrust to turn fatal crashes into survivable landings. The concept is the brainchild of engineering faculty members Eshel Wasim and Dharsan Srinivasan.

While still theoretical, the idea has been entered into the James Dyson Award competition, with hopes of securing funding to test its feasibility.
