Scientists at Curtin University have discovered a new bee species in Western Australia named Megachile (Hackeriapis) lucifer, dubbed the ‘Lucifer bee’ for the devil-like horns on its females.
Lead researcher Kit Prendergast said the name was inspired by both the insect’s striking features and the Netflix series Lucifer.
The species, the first in its group identified in over 20 years, was found during a 2019 survey of an endangered wildflower.
Genetic testing confirmed it was previously unknown to science. Researchers believe the horns may serve a functional role in nesting or defense.
Prendergast said the find underscores the importance of studying native pollinators, many of which remain undescribed as climate change and mining threaten their habitats.
How convenient to name a previously unknown bee ‘Lucifer’…
