Mystery buyers to revive Auckland University Bookstore

Mystery new owners with bookselling experience have purchased the failed Auckland University bookstore Ubiq, which went into liquidation in July and closed on August 31.

Liquidator Rachel Mason confirmed to legacy media the business, including stock and assets but not its debts, has been sold and is expected to reopen under new ownership by the first school term of 2026.

The closure shocked staff and students, as Ubiq had long supported the Auckland University Students Association, but losses since 2018 and the impact of Covid ultimately forced the shutdown.
