A petition with 14,000 signatures opposing sand mining at Bream Bay has been presented to Green MP Hūhana Lyndon by Tāwera Nikau, co-chair of the Endangered Species Foundation.
Some members of the Whangārei community have been protesting McCallum Brothers Limited’s proposal to dredge nine million cubic metres of sand over 35 years. Concerns include ecological damage to endangered species like the New Zealand fairy tern and hawksbill turtles, as well as the cultural and environmental significance of the area.
Lyndon criticised the fast-track consent process, warning it could bypass community input. A large-scale boat protest is planned for March 16 to further oppose the project, with plans of growing the petition to 20,000 signatures.
Sand mining as actually the cause of “climate change sea level rise” which is actually caused by shoreline erosion caused by the sand mining. They is the cause on many of the pacific islands while they try to blame it on climate change further pushing their agenda.
Most of the sand is used for the production of concrete . If NZ opened up (removed all regulations) on hemp farming we could replace a lot of the concrete needs with hempcrete which is a better product anyway.
National, the regulation cow boys…just look at the appalling Gene Tech Bill they are trying to fast track……
