A magnitude 7.6 earthquake struck off the coast of Japan’s north-eastern Aomori region at 23:15 local time, prompting widespread evacuations and initial tsunami warnings.
Warnings were later downgraded to advisories after 40cm waves were recorded, according to British state media.
Local media report several injuries, suspended train services, and disrupted transport as authorities assess damage.
The government activated its crisis management centre, with officials stressing that rescue and relief operations are underway.
No abnormalities were detected at the Higashidori, Onagawa, or Fukushima nuclear sites.
Japan, one of the world’s most seismically active nations, continues to grapple with the risks underscored by the devastating 2011 Fukushima disaster.
