Americans are heading to the polls on Tuesday, November 3, for the 2026 midterm elections, with control of both chambers of Congress at stake.
All 435 seats in the House of Representatives and 35 of the 100 Senate seats are being contested, alongside elections for state governors, state legislatures and various local offices.
The midterms take place halfway through a president’s four-year term and determine the composition of Congress for the following two years. The results will establish whether Republicans retain their majorities in the House and Senate or Democrats gain control of one or both chambers.
Voters will also decide a range of state and local issues, including ballot measures covering taxation, electoral rules and other public policy matters.
Early voting has been underway for several weeks, with more than 57 million ballots cast ahead of election day. Economic concerns, healthcare, immigration and government spending have featured prominently in campaigns across the country.
Republicans currently control both chambers of Congress, holding a narrow majority in the House and a 53-47 advantage in the Senate.
Voting will conclude at different times across the country’s time zones, with results expected to emerge throughout Tuesday evening. Close contests and the counting of postal ballots could mean several days pass before the final composition of Congress is confirmed.
