Animal welfare experts opposed government’s pig crate law rewrite

Pig crate news

Newly released documents reveal the Government’s National Animal Welfare Advisory Committee (NAWAC) strongly opposed Associate Agriculture Minister Andrew Hoggard’s new pig welfare reforms, which retain farrowing crates for another decade despite prior plans to ban them.

NAWAC warned the changes fail to meet the Animal Welfare Act’s purpose and risk further legal challenge, saying confinement limits still prevent sows’ natural nesting behaviour and fall “below minimum standards.”

The reforms, passed at first reading in early October, allow crate use until 2035 with minor design changes and a 13.3% increase in space—far less than NAWAC’s 56–140% recommendation.

In a report on state-funded media, SPCA experts accused Hoggard of misleading the public about consultation, claiming only NZ Pork was involved, while legal scholars said it was unprecedented for ministers to disregard NAWAC’s advice. Hoggard defended the move as a balanced compromise between welfare and economic viability, citing lower costs for farmers than the original Labour proposal.

  1. Pigs were created as a garbage disposal unit
How anybody can eat this crap is beyond me
But this will be defended by pork lovers until black and blue right down to the wire
The thought of doing so is repugnant and nauseating
Pigs carry at least 19 known diseases
Including trichinosis small microscopic worms that penetrate the bodies organs including the heart liver and eyes
Globally, pork consumption is linked to several food borne illnesses, with Hepatitis E alone affecting around 20 million people annually
Many cases traced to pork liver
Key Diseases Linked to Pork Consumption being
    Hepatitis E
Estimated 20 million infections per year worldwide
Pork liver is the leading food-based transmitter in developed nations.
Symptoms: fever, fatigue, jaundice, vomiting, joint pain, and liver enlargement.
    Trichinosis (Trichinosis)
Caused by eating under cooked pork infected with Trichinae roundworms

    New Zealand Context
The 2023 Annual Report on Food borne Diseases in New Zealand includes pork-related illnesses but does not isolate pork-specific case numbers
However, pork is among the meats monitored for pathogens like Salmonella, Campylobacter, and Listeria

Leviticus 11:7 “And the swine, though he divide the hoof, and be clovenfooted, yet he cheweth not the cud; he is unclean to you.”
8 “Of their flesh shall ye not eat, and their carcase shall ye not touch; they are unclean to you.”

Because You don’t even need to eat pork to get sick
    Pigs eat their own shit
You are what You eat or full of it
And then there is the pig toilet
    Bon bon appétit
    Enjoy!

  2. Not reforms when they are going backwards or at least, not going forwards. The globalists hate people, I guess pigs will fare no better.

  3. Re: Don’t go there
When animals like pigs etc were seen as unclean in the Old Law at that time it was to condition obedience among the Hebrew nation. Christ came to abolish the old traditions as it was detrimental to their faith and even criticised advocates of it. MARK 7: 1-19

Animal welfare & environment practices just sum up the level of respect one has for the Creator (or natural order of things) & community who live to benefit from it. PSALMS 115:16

And if disease or poor quality meat results, hardly the animals fault as they have no control over their diet or surroundings

    • The Law still stands and has not been done away with
      And remains as Our teacher
John 1:17 “For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.”
Matthew 5:18 “For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.”
Luke 16:17 “And it is easier for heaven and earth to pass, than one tittle of the law to fail.”
Titus 1:14 “Not giving heed to Jewish fables, and commandments of men, that turn from the truth.”
Psalms 115:16 has got absolutely nothing to do with it

  4. Look at the parables of the rich man and Lazarus and the new wine into old wine skins. It is clear that the mosaic law was done away with after Jesus death and the Christian congregation was formed.
