An Auckland man has been sentenced to three years and three months in prison for a violent, daylight assault on a Taiwanese tourist in Mission Bay that left the victim with serious dental injuries and resulted in the theft of his family’s passports.
Nineteen-year-old Fonumotu Manuhaapai followed the tourist along Tamaki Drive in January 2023 before attacking him for refusing to hand over money, punching him in the face and stealing a bag containing cash, an iPhone, and five passports.
The court rejected claims the attack was opportunistic, citing its premeditated nature and impact on community safety, especially with the victim being a vulnerable visitor.
Manuhaapai was also sentenced for a separate unprovoked assault on a petrol station attendant, whom he left unconscious and bleeding after punching them in the face.
An older commentary site but still relevant in many aspects of living in NZ…

Pathetic sentence may as well not bother
Wait until some mongrel(s) attack you or a family member…then the sentence won’t be ‘pathetic’, but very relevant.
I see sensible sentencing still escapes our judicial system.
Still, this offender got more than Blake Ivan Miller, a 19 year old rapist of a child who still got to live in the same town as his victim…
The poor little girls family were the ones who had to move away from him.
