Retail crime-tracking firm Auror, already widely used for automated number-plate recognition, has launched a new in-store facial recognition system that creates temporary biometric templates of every shopper.
The technology, provided by a third-party partner, compares faces against retailer-set watchlists of high-risk offenders before discarding unmatched data.
While Auror insists it cannot be used for profiling or marketing, the move coincides with a Court of Appeal challenge over police use of its number-plate system, which is now accessed about 700 times daily.
According to state-funded media the government has signalled support for broader retail use of facial recognition following a privacy commissioner’s cautious approval, with Justice Minister Paul Goldsmith holding multiple meetings with Auror about policy changes.
Critics highlight the growing surveillance reach of the company, which recently secured US$82m in funding and partnered with Axon, as police use its systems for investigations well beyond shoplifting.

This facial recognition tech feels like a massive step into an uncomfortable surveillance state. Its concerning that retailers and police can use it so easily, and the lack of clear privacy protections makes me wary.

The company is privately owned, with significant investment from various firms including Axon Enterprise, W23 Global, and Folklore Ventures, which were part of a $82 million funding round in November 2024.
Police tap the system (ANPR) run by Auckland company Auror 250,000 times a year – it is in common use outside big retailers and petrol stations. Police automatically get 60 days of hits on any vehicle plate from the system at the press of a button.

This article cites the 8,500 or so people or entities with a police email address which can access Auror. With eight to ten thousand people logging in to this platform, statistically, several will not observe the legal considerations around tracking a vehicle with the intention of removing it from circulation and replacing it’s plates to correspond with an inferior model.
