Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has confirmed Australia will formally recognise a Palestinian state at the United Nations General Assembly in September.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu calling the move “shameful” and warning it would “embolden Hamas”.
Speaking in Canberra after a cabinet meeting, Albanese said he had told Netanyahu directly that “the situation in Gaza has gone beyond the world’s worst fears” and that “a two-state solution is humanity’s best hope to break the cycle of violence in the Middle East.” He outlined commitments secured from Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, including recognition of Israel’s right to exist, demilitarisation, elections, governance reform, and an end to payments to the families of prisoners and martyrs. “Our government has made it clear that there can be no role for the terrorists of Hamas in any future Palestinian state,” Albanese said.
Netanyahu criticised Australia for following Europe down a “rabbit hole” of recognition, questioning how Australia would respond if terrorists attacked Sydney or Melbourne.
Albanese said the decision was part of a coordinated global push to “deliver self-determination for the people of Palestine in a way that isolates Hamas, disarms it and drives it out of the region once and for all.”
It’s not like he wants to but when you need to be in vogue with voters then he needs to like all the others.
