An Emirates flight from Sydney to Christchurch was directly warned by the Chinese military to avoid airspace over the Tasman Sea this morning amid unannounced naval exercises in international waters, 670 km southeast of Sydney.
The warning prompted air traffic controllers to issue formal advice to commercial pilots, leading to multiple flight diversions.
Chinese vessels were observed deploying a floating target and changing formations in a manner consistent with live-fire drills, though Australian authorities have not confirmed if shots were fired.
Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong stated that discussions with China were ongoing regarding transparency in military activities, while Prime Minister Anthony Albanese downplayed concerns, with reference to international law.
However, opposition figures criticised the government’s response, calling for a stronger stance against China’s growing military assertiveness in the Pacific.
