Senate Democrats have once again rejected a Republican proposal to guarantee pay for federal employees and military personnel during the ongoing government shutdown.
The measure, introduced by Senator Ron Johnson of Wisconsin, was an updated version of his “Shutdown Fairness Act,” expanded to include furloughed workers after Democrats objected to the original version.
Despite support from three Democratic senators and backing from federal employee unions, the bill failed 53–43, largely along party lines. Johnson and GOP colleagues accused Democrats of using workers as “political pawns,” while Democrats argued the bill could give the president too much discretion over who gets paid.
The rejection came amid rising tensions on Capitol Hill, where the shutdown has stretched to 38 days.
Senate Republicans had planned to reintroduce the House-passed continuing resolution to reopen the government, but a surge of Democratic unity following recent election victories has complicated negotiations.
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer offered a counter-proposal linking the reopening of government to a one-year extension of Obamacare subsidies — an offer Republicans dismissed outright. The Senate is set to reconvene Saturday for yet another vote on the House measure, with little sign of compromise in sight.
