Jevon McSkimming, New Zealand’s Deputy Commissioner of Police, has been suspended from duty as he faces a criminal investigation involving both the New Zealand Police and the Independent Police Conduct Authority.

The specifics of the allegations against McSkimming remain under wraps due to suppression orders.

A statement from his lawyer, released Tuesday, confirmed that McSkimming has been suspended on full pay since before Christmas.

“Mr. McSkimming continues to receive full pay while the investigation is underway. It is common practice for police officers in such situations to be suspended pending the outcome,” the statement read.

The statement emphasised McSkimming’s commitment to cooperating with the investigation and expressed his confidence in returning to his post once the inquiry concludes.

McSkimming was a finalist for the role of Police Commissioner last year but ultimately lost out to Richard Chambers. In 2023, he was appointed statutory Deputy Commissioner, a role that comes with greater authority and a higher salary than other deputy roles.

His responsibilities before his suspension included overseeing key areas such as road policing, strategic communications, risk management, and firearms regulation.

McSkimming has worked at police headquarters since 2010 across various departments, including financial planning, infrastructure management, and service delivery. Having joined the police force in 1996, he also gained significant frontline experience in Auckland and Southland.

His leadership has been central to several major reforms, such as the launch of the 105 non-emergency service and the management of police IT systems and assets.

Authorities have yet to announce when the investigation is expected to conclude or provide further details on the case.

  1. Suppression orders need to be outlawed permanently. They are selectively enforced and serve no purpose other than insulating the establishment and its cronies from well-deserved scrutiny.

“Oh yeah, this guy who was almost your police commissioner is super corrupt, but you don’t need to know the details, we’re on it. Trust us 😉”

    Not good enough.
