Street racers took over parts of Auckland on Saturday night as approximately 200 vehicles engaged in dangerous activities across multiple suburbs including Penrose, Onehunga, and Westgate.

According to a report in state media RNZ, the illicit racing event unfolded just after midnight when a car carrying three individuals was observed running a red light on Bush Road in Albany. The driver attempted to flee, leading to a pursuit.

The pursuit concluded on Henderson Valley Road in West Auckland, where law enforcement successfully apprehended the three occupants of the fleeing vehicle. The individuals, aged 16, 18, and 20, were taken into custody and are scheduled to appear in court next week.

Police detained two others in connection with a separate incident earlier in the evening. Although not formally charged, they were taken into custody after their vehicle was spotted driving recklessly in Karaka around 3 a.m.
