The allegations stem from a social media post that was interpreted as a coded threat against the sitting US president.
A federal grand jury has indicted former FBI Director James Comey for making threats against US President Donald Trump, the Department of Justice announced on Tuesday.
The DOJ alleges that “a reasonable recipient familiar with the circumstances” would interpret Comey’s May 2025 Instagram post, featuring seashells arranged in the sand to depict the numbers “86 47,” as “a serious expression of an intent to do harm to the president of the United States.”
The number combination “86 47” is widely interpreted as coded language. In American slang, “86” can mean to remove, get rid of, eject, or in some contexts kill someone. “47” is understood to reference the 47th President of the United States — Donald Trump.
Because Trump is serving as the 47th president, authorities allege the phrase could be read as a threat against him. Supporters of the indictment argue the combination amounted to an implied call for violence.
