The Government has announced a $24 million investment into artificial intelligence and biotechnology research, partnering with Singapore on projects aimed at healthy ageing and sustainable food production.

The funding will support seven joint research initiatives over the next three years and is part of the Catalyst Fund, which promotes international scientific collaboration.

Science, Innovation and Technology Minister Shane Reti says the programmes are focused on practical applications that can improve public health and support future food industries.

The AI research, developed alongside AI Singapore, includes tools to assist with dementia risk detection, cognitive health monitoring, and improving aged care assessments. The biotechnology stream, in partnership with Singapore’s Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR), includes projects on alternative proteins, algae-based foods, bio-fermented ingredients, and “protein derived from insect larvae”, in particular ‘Black Soldier Fly Bioproducts’ that will explore “the use of insect larvae to develop bioactive compounds and protein sources for human and animal nutrition”.

Schools and research institutions leading the projects include the University of Otago, University of Auckland, Victoria University of Wellington, Cawthron Institute, Scion, and University of Canterbury.

  1. We’ll all be eating insects but I can assure you those troughing politicians will still be chowing down their taxpayer funded angus beef burgers.

  2. A meal of poultry, fish, pork or beef with a side of vegetables and a fruit dessert seems reasonable. Bugs are for the birds.👍

  3. Replacing beef fish pork and poultry with a patented food source so some sicko corporations makes a truckload of cash while the plebs have grubs for their grub.

    • It is possible a 100 years from now some western “non-empath” leader may be quoted as once saying
“Let them eat Kunga Cake” (Nkhungu cake)
The African part of the world loves it
Do those same midges live in NZ ?
How will our biodiversity safety measures stack up over time? Will our huhu grubs be affected? Or scientifically played with?
So many questions? Do we trust today’s scientists to do the right thing for humanity rather than for profit. Have our dairy prices gone up so NZers are weaned off it? Next high pricing all meats for non vegetarians? Then the chess play of cheap nutitional even creamy insect food as a milk substitute for hot drinks?
I’m overthinking… the way we have been continually being manipulated makes the mind run wild with possibilities… all sadly mistrusting.

      • No country in the world conumes bugs as a staple part of their diet. Just like huhu grubs here, it is always a novelty food source.

Notice everywhere in the world, at the exact same time, for various preposterous reasons, butter and olive oil have skyrocketed in price, while GMO seed oils remain cheap? Fonterra would have you believe that it’s purely due to Global market prices, but those prices are manupulated.

        No, you’re not overthinking this.

  4. They have already been adding insects as natural color or flavour here since 2014, look at the ingredients of strawberry milk for kids and what their ingredients are

Note: google started censoring search for the ingredients with other stuff but if you dig deeper you will get it

  5. You dont eat turkeys during the warmer months because turkeys eat crickets then and turkey meat the turkey meat tastes like arse but they want us too?
