Green Party members Chloe Swarbrick and Ricardo Mendendez March have come under fire for using a controversial slogan.
Towards the end of her speech at a pro-Palestine rally in Auckland over the weekend, MP Swarbrick exclaimed ‘From the River to Sea’. The phrase was tweeted later in the day by Menendez March.
Some Jewish groups consider the phrase antisemitic, with a spokesperson telling legacy media it calls, ‘for the destruction of the state of Israel. That means they want to do away with Jews who live there.’
Swarbrick defended her actions by saying she had consulted with Jewish and Palestinian groups about its use, and also by the fact it was used earlier in the day by the Jewish co-founder of the group Dayenu: New Zealand Jews Against Occupation.
Swarbrick told legacy media that the, ‘pathway forward for ongoing peace means justice. That means an immediate ceasefire, return of all hostages on both sides and recognition of the humanity and human rights of Palestinians, wherever they are, but especially in their occupied homeland – from the Jordan River to the Mediterranean Sea.’
Video of Swarbrick’s speech was shared widely on Twitter (X), provoking strong reaction for and against the Auckland Central MP, while Menendez March’s tweet was called ‘disgraceful’ by ACT Party leader David Seymour.
Swarbrick also took issue with Auckland Museum’s decision to light up the iconic building in the colours of Israel last week. ‘Ignorance from a war museum is despicable, and right here within the boundaries of Auckland Central I will be continuing to hold that war museum to account.’
Meanwhile Labour MP Phil Twyford required police assistance to leave the stage after criticising both Hamas and the Israeli government for their actions in the ongoing conflict.
‘I for one, condemn the violence against civilians by Hamas. But I also condemn the violence against civilians by the Israeli Defence Forces. The fact that Hamas killed civilians does not give Israel a free pass to kill civilians…’ he told the crowd, before he was booed and led away.

When Hamas use civilian areas to launch attacks or store munitions this is a “war crime” under the Geneva conventions.

I find it indicative of a complete disconnect from reality when we see “Gays for Gaza”, “LGBTQ for Gaza” or “Queers for Gaza”: Any of these people would be killed if they entered Gaza and revealed their sexuality.
