Peter Kosetatino, a 17-year-old convicted of raping a stranger at knifepoint in Auckland’s Albert Park, has had his prison sentence extended from two years, two months, and one week to three years and 11 months by a High Court judge.

The judge deemed the original sentence “manifestly inadequate” given the severity of the crimes, which also included the aggravated robbery of two men. Kosetatino, who acted with a 15-year-old accomplice, threatened and assaulted his victims in November 2022, leading to significant trauma for the rape victim.

Judge Claire Ryan had initially sentenced Kosetatino with substantial discounts due to his youth, guilty pleas, and rehabilitative efforts.

However, Crown prosecutor Zoe Hamill argued that the discounts were excessive considering the gravity of the offenses.

High Court Justice Peter Andrew agreed, emphasizing the importance of principles such as denunciation, deterrence, and public protection. Despite acknowledging the negative impact of imprisonment on young offenders, Justice Andrew concluded that the seriousness of Kosetatino’s actions warranted a longer sentence.
