The mastermind behind New Zealand’s biggest-ever meth importation has been identified as Baltej Singh, an Indian businessman who was jailed for 22 years after being caught with 700kg of methamphetamine, with his name previously suppressed to ‘protect him and his family’.
According to reports in legacy media and The Noticer, Singh abandoned his bid for permanent suppression after courts ruled it was in the public interest to identify him, despite claims his family faced threats due to links to the 1984 assassination of Indian prime minister Indira Gandhi by his uncle, Satwant Singh.
The High Court heard Singh orchestrated imports of drug-laced beverages from multiple countries between 2021 and 2023, with the operation leading to the death of a 21-year-old man and the seizure of large quantities of meth and cash, while his co-offender was jailed for manslaughter and drug supply.
And now the Government has opened the door for Indian immigrants to enter more easily, and all that entails, what do they think is going to happen…
