A 20-year-old Invercargill man has been charged with kidnapping and several other offences after allegedly stealing an ambulance with a police officer and paramedic inside.

The incident occurred around 2:25am Monday on Elles Road, where emergency responders were assisting an “agitated person.”

While being spoken to in the back of the ambulance, the man reportedly jumped into the driver’s seat and drove off, stopping after about a block.

No injuries were reported, but police highlighted the significant danger posed to both the ambulance occupants and the public. An investigation is ongoing.
