Human Rights Commission Chief Commissioner Dr Stephen Rainbow is set to face an independent investigation following concerns raised about his conduct.
Justice Minister Paul Goldsmith confirmed that Kristy McDonald will lead the inquiry, while declining to comment further due to fair process and natural justice considerations. Rainbow’s 2024 appointment was controversial, attracting criticism from opposition parties over his past pro-Israel stance and comments regarding transgender issues.
Although Rainbow maintained he would uphold the rights of all groups, his appointment was later challenged in court. In December, the High Court of New Zealand ruled the appointment process was unlawful, finding Justice Minister Paul Goldsmith had inserted Rainbow into the candidate pool despite him not being on the original shortlist.
The selection panel had also advised against his appointment, citing a lack of legal experience, but Goldsmith proceeded with the appointment regardless.

Will Goldsmith end up being investigated too and held to account? Somehow I suspect not.
