Kāinga Ora chief executive Andrew McKenzie is set to depart at the end of October due to significant changes in the organisation that he said diverged from his initial role expectations.
The chair of the government’s social housing agency, Simon Moutter, praised McKenzie’s eight-year tenure noting his accomplishments in establishing Kāinga Ora, leading it through the Covid-19 ‘pandemic’, and enhancing tenant outcomes.
However recent governmental changes prompted by an Independent Review led by former prime minister Sir Bill English have resulted in a substantial reduction in the scope and accountabilities of McKenzie’s position. Consequently, McKenzie’s departure will be treated ‘as a redundancy’, entitling him to a six-month salary payout of approximately $365,500.
The Independent Review identified critical issues within the social housing system, including financial unsustainability and inadequate housing delivery. In response, the government has begun implementing several recommendations, such as refreshing the Kāinga Ora board and issuing simplified directives to improve financial performance.
Housing Minister Chris Bishop acknowledged the agency’s underperformance and the need for significant financial adjustments. Despite these challenges, McKenzie is expected to stay on until October to assist with ongoing changes and help develop a new plan to be presented to the government in November.

If his payout was six months of his annual salary, that means this useless man was getting about $730,000 a year. Nearly the same as Andrew Costa. Equally as useless. Probably the same as the CEO of Kiwi Rail and the rest of the big earning half wits. Not only that, when you see their photographs, they look so low IQ like that one inserted into the article. No wonder the country is going down the drain.
