Kaipara District Council first to scrap Māori Ward

The Kaipara District Council voted 6 to 3 to disestablish the Te Moananui o Kaipara Māori ward, becoming the first council to do so under new regulations.

The extraordinary meeting, marked by high tensions and a protest, saw opposition from the community and council members alike.

Māori ward councillor Pera Paniora interrupted proceedings twice to allow demonstrators to break out in song inside council chamber, leading to a brief pause in the meeting.

Despite calls from Paniora and Councillor Eryn Wilson-Collins to postpone the vote until Maori had been consulted, the motion was pushed through.

Deputy Mayor Jonathan Larsen’s comments comparing the day’s events to “tribal warfare” highlighted the deep divisions within the council and community. Mayor Craig Jepson’s firm stance on the removal of the ward led to calls for his resignation from some quarters.

Earlier, a representative from Ngāti Whātua announced that the iwi had filed an injunction with the High Court to halt the vote. The deadline for councils to decide on Māori wards is September 6.

  1. Good all this division is not good for the country, we need to be coming together as New Zealanders and dealing with the real problem the globalist attempt to take over the world.

  2. Good Rotorua better be next, we already have a Maori organisation funded by the ratepayers to the tune of 350K per year with 12 -14 people on a board in a building right next to council, advising our council so why do we need Maori wards also? We were asked 15 years ago if we wanted them and we said no. But they set up Te Tatou Te Arawa anyway. I always voted people on their merits not their race and yes I voted for many Maori. In hindsight I regret being so reasonable because it got thrown in my face and not only that I have to pay for it too via my rates and taxes.

    Don’t believe me?

The division and special treatment has to stop.

    • Only if we ALL work for it, no room for people sitting on their hands. Be interesting to see how many healthcare workers and police make it thru forced vaxx alive
