The family of New Zealand-born surfer Steven Jeffrey Payne, who was fatally attacked by a shark at Wharton Beach in Western Australia, has stated he would not have supported a shark cull, recognising the risks of the ocean.
Payne, a six-foot-four “gentle giant,” was five weeks into a six-month caravan trip with his partner and dog when the tragedy occurred. A passionate rugby fan, volunteer firefighter, and beloved friend, Payne had a deep love for the ocean, having frequently dived with sharks.
His death marks the fourth fatal attack off Esperance in eight years, reigniting debates over shark mitigation measures.
While local leaders stress the need for discussions on safety improvements, Payne’s family has thanked the community for their support and urged against retaliatory action.
Authorities are still investigating the attack, including identifying the species involved.
