Leap year glitch causes petrol station outage

Petrol station news

A leap year technical glitch has caused outages at fuel stations across the country, affecting motorists at all fuel brands.

Allied Petroleum and Gull acknowledged the nationwide technical problems, with a Gull spokesperson confirming to State-funded media RNZ the outage was due to a leap day error in their technology provider’s system.

The issue has prevented customers from paying for fuel at unattended terminals and some pumps, though in-store payment systems remain operational.

Gull is working with self-service payment provider Invenco to rectify the issue as quickly as possible. To make up for the inconvenience Gull plans to offer a Discount Day next week.

BP said its fuel card transactions were not impacted, attributing problems at Outdoor Payment Terminals (OPTs) at their truckstops to the same glitch, with their provider also urgently seeking a resolution.

Worldline New Zealand clarified that the glitch only affects unattended fuel terminals, with efforts underway to resolve the issue.

  1. Y-to-K 24 years later???
THIS is why we keep petrol in approved Jerry Cans at home in a separate locker, away from the sun and bad weather…

  2. Note to software engineers everywhere:
It’s a leap year if it’s divisive by 4, unless it’s divisive by 100 then it is not, unless it’s divisible by 400 then it is.
Remember that you have to use the complete year (e.g. 2024) and not the 2-digit year (e.g. 24).
    Hope this helps!
