Luxon says he ‘misspoke’ in Iran comments

Luxon

Prime Minister Christopher Luxon has acknowledged he “misspoke” when stating New Zealand supported “any actions” to prevent Iran obtaining nuclear weapons, clarifying he meant actions consistent with long-standing opposition to nuclear proliferation, terrorism sponsorship and repression, but “obviously, not any action” and not “at any cost.”

He also ruled out New Zealand joining United States military strikes, saying “it’s a no from me” and confirming the country had not been asked to participate.

Labour leader Chris Hipkins welcomed the clarification and the decision not to join the conflict, but argued the government should more firmly condemn the strikes as violations of international law, warning that adherence to global rules is vital for a small country like New Zealand.

Green Party co-leader Marama Davidson also criticised any suggestion of endorsing military action, saying it endangered the “rules-based international order.”

Meanwhile, New Zealanders in Iran have been urged to leave if safe, with 2,150 registered on SafeTravel.

  1. Luxon changes his tune because Trump’s war against Iran did not go according to plan. Idiot Winston Peters probably discovered another brain cell as he now chooses to stay silent.

  2. Back pedal, back pedal…..too late National…….same for you NZF………no vote from me……..

And no I wont be voting Labour either. They have consistently shown a pro US stance.

  3. Interesting to see Green Party co-leader Marama Davidson speaking up in defence of the “rules-based international order”. Does she know the difference between the “rules-based international order” and “international law”?

    • There is no such thing as “international law”, nor should there be. We don’t have a one-world government, no matter how badly the globalists in Davos and Brussels want to make it so.

Rules-based international anything by its very definition will always end up being enforced by whomever is economically and militarily superior to everyone else.

America can do whatever it wants right now. Not saying I support warmongering, just acknowledging basic reality.

Our politicians from these two small islands at the bottom of the earth are less than irrelevant in these matters. The US could conquer us in a weekend. The best thing anyone in the beehive can do right now is to shut up.

  4. “consistent with long-standing opposition to nuclear proliferation, terrorism sponsorship and repression”

Unless it is Israel, right Chris? They have nukes, they sponsor terrorism and repress the Palestinians.

How can we have no journalist willing to put the hypocrisy to him?

  5. Why not look at the history of Persia/Iran and Israel going back to around 600BC or earlier, and then comment on this situation. Knee jerk responses really don’t help anyone understand the reality of the current events in the Middle East.
