Police have charged a 32-year-old man with importing methamphetamine disguised as sweets, after toxic lollies were unknowingly distributed in Auckland City Mission food parcels in August 2024.
The meth-laced “Rinda” lollies were traced to an international shipment, with police recovering 34.5 pieces. Several recipients tasted the chemically flavoured sweets, six reported side effects, and three required medical treatment.
Investigators believe the distribution was accidental given the high street value of the drugs, and while the accused is facing separate importing charges, there is insufficient evidence to directly link him to the food parcel contamination. He will appear in Auckland District Court next April.
