Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has blamed Australian government policy for contributing to the deadly attack on a Jewish gathering in Sydney, arguing that Canberra’s support for Palestinian statehood has helped “fuel anti-Semitism”.
The comments followed Sunday’s mass shooting during a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach, where two gunmen killed 15 people before police shot dead one of the attackers.
Netanyahu said he had previously warned Prime Minister Anthony Albanese that recognising Palestinian statehood would “pour fuel on the anti-Semitic fire,” claiming it emboldened hostility toward Jewish communities in Australia.
Australia formally recognised Palestine at the United Nations General Assembly in September, a move Netanyahu opposes and says rewards militant groups such as Hamas. He accused the Australian government of weakness and inaction in confronting what he described as rising anti-Semitism.
Albanese, meanwhile, has focused on domestic gun control in the wake of the attack, after police confirmed the deceased suspect legally owned multiple firearms.
The Bondi Beach shooting was Australia’s deadliest mass killing since the Port Arthur massacre in 1996 and has intensified political debate both domestically and internationally amid wider tensions linked to the ongoing war in Gaza.
