Australian authorities have charged a 21-year-old New Zealand man after allegedly discovering 21kg of heroin — valued at more than $10 million — hidden in floral-patterned, vacuum-sealed bags inside his luggage upon arrival from Thailand.
Australian Border Force officers selected the traveller for a baggage check at Sydney Airport on Sunday, where the packages were uncovered, representing what police say could have generated around 100,000 street-level deals.
The man faces a life-imprisonment-level offence for importing a commercial quantity of heroin and is due to appear in the NSW Bail Division Local Court on Monday.
Officials said the bust highlights the effectiveness of Australia’s layered border-security systems and warned travellers that smuggling illicit substances carries immense risk.
