Over 100 Palestinians are reported to have lost their lives, with more than 280 wounded, as they gathered for an aid delivery in Gaza, reports say.
The incident has been reported by Palestinian health officials and potentially marks a significant escalation in the nearly five-month-old conflict, bringing the total death toll to over 30,000.
According to Palestinian authorities, the casualties occurred when Israeli forces shot at the crowd awaiting aid.
However, Israel disputes these claims, suggesting that the chaos and resultant deaths were partially caused by individuals being run over by aid trucks in the tumult. The Israeli military acknowledges firing but says it was in response to perceived threats, and that the situation is under review.
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas called the incident ‘a massacre’ which now complicates efforts toward a ceasefire.
