The Pentagon has placed roughly 1,500 active-duty US troops on standby for a potential deployment to Minnesota as unrest linked to immigration enforcement intensifies, the Washington Post reported on Sunday, citing defense officials.
Demonstrations opposing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations have persisted for months across the state, with tensions surging in early January following the fatal shooting of a woman during an incident in Minneapolis. According to the report, units from the Alaska-based 11th Airborne Division have been directed to prepare in case the situation deteriorates further. A US defense official told the outlet that no decision on deployment has yet been made.
A White House spokesperson said the Pentagon routinely prepares for contingencies that the president may consider.
President Donald Trump has warned he could invoke the 1807 Insurrection Act if what he described as “corrupt politicians” fail to curb “professional agitators and insurrectionists” targeting federal immigration agents. The law would permit the use of federal troops to suppress domestic unrest or rebellion.
Trump has repeatedly criticised Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey over their opposition to his immigration crackdown. Multiple outlets reported on Friday that the US Department of Justice has opened a criminal investigation into both officials, examining allegations of a conspiracy to obstruct federal immigration enforcement, a probe expected to involve subpoenas.
Walz and Frey have condemned the deployment of nearly 3,000 federal agents to the Twin Cities earlier this month. Following the fatal shooting of local resident Renee Good by an ICE agent, Frey publicly demanded that federal agents leave the city.
The killing intensified protests and led to several confrontations between demonstrators and ICE personnel. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem has accused the governor and mayor of endangering federal officials by encouraging protesters to interfere with and assault agents.
