Pukekohe woman sentenced to home detention for $1.5m tax evasion

Pukekohe woman Haitelenisia Kaumavae has been sentenced to nine months’ home detention after evading nearly $1.5 million in GST, PAYE, and income tax through her labour supply company, M & H Kaumavae Ltd.

Over several years Kaumavae failed to file or submitted false tax returns, depriving the public of significant revenue, according to Inland Revenue.

Although the court acknowledged she did not personally profit because of “cultural obligations”, the offending was described as serious and deliberate. Kaumavae must also serve six months of post-detention conditions and repay $6,500 in reparation.
