Sealord factory in Nelson facing closure

Sealord Nelson news

Sealord has announced a proposal to close its coated fish factory in Nelson, putting 79 permanent jobs at risk, including 57 factory and 22 management roles.

Chief executive Doug Paulin cited soaring labour, electricity, freight costs, and pressure from supermarkets for higher margins as driving the move, which would not affect its deep-sea fishing or canned tuna operations.

The company is also seeking changes to collective agreements at other Nelson facilities to cut costs.

Workers and unions have condemned the plan as a betrayal, with E tū warning it is a “shortsighted” decision that could push jobs offshore.

Nelson Mayor Nick Smith described the potential closure as another major blow for the region, already reeling from recent plant shutdowns, while Sealord says staff feedback is being sought before consultation closes in three weeks.

    • E tu union. I was joined to them briefly years ago. They were happy to take my money, but not so much to actually do anything that would be if any help to me. Just another self serving bunch of grubs.

  1. A bit like Eves Valley closure
Which has presented itself at a most inopportune moment
And I can’t see reprieve even in the interim
To process what has been described as a wall of wood from the recent Nelson storms that nobody is going to want due to the downturn and slump in the construction industry
That cannot be exported into an already overproduced and flooded market
Lets hope not for the sake of the 140 workers involved
The great Ardern covid wrecking ball of business failures aftermath trundles on and rises to the surface
From which some people and enterprises never fully did and will never recover
    Watch this space

  2. Has nothing to do with the decisions made by those controlling our Govt🥴. Those few that think they control all of us and the world are marching on with this collapse. Do not comply may be our best option for comeback. When we are no longer playing the game, how powerful are these few? Do not comply while we still have a leg to stand on, how much longer before the unemployment and homelessness drive us into the controllers hands completely

  3. E tū warning: E tu, meaning “we screw you too”, is joined at the hip with exactly the bunch of corporates that actually don’t care for the people. In their nepotistic manner they think their E tu tribe has any standing or mana.
In the process to be important they frittered away the chances for their people. And their people are stupid enough to trust corporate tribal ‘leaders’, most of them deluded racist egomaniacs.
Haven’t seen a Haka in an office lately.
    Union…my a*se!
