Secondary teachers launch seven-day strike over pay and conditions

More than 21,000 secondary and area school teachers will begin seven days of rolling strike action from Tuesday after rejecting the government’s latest pay offer.

The PPTA says the proposed increase falls short of inflation and fails to address key concerns around teacher retention, workload, and pastoral support for students. Teachers will stage partial strikes, a nationwide full-day walkout on 23 October, and a two-hour strike on 5 November.

PPTA president Chris Abercrombie said competitive pay and better conditions were essential amid major education reforms, while Education Minister Erica Stanford maintained negotiations were continuing in good faith. Labour leader Chris Hipkins criticised Stanford for not being directly involved in the talks.

  1. Who in their right mind would want to be a teacher now?
With everything upside down twisted around and bent out of shape
With a learning landscape politically charged littered with diatribes fake narratives denunciations and confusion
No wonder kids are so screwed up now aggrieved and afflicted with the doctrines of social media influencers with a bent moral compass
Which framework model can be construed to include some bussy inspired predator teachers
    I say double their pay
And give them medals – “I Survived being a Teacher”
If this isn’t whacky I don’t know what is which backs up my assertions
    Where does it all end?

  2. Considering most teachers are just looney leftists who don’t teach kids how to think but teach them what to think maybe they should all end unemployed.

  3. They’re only protesting because it’s a national led coalition government and their unions are labour supporters.

Where were these so called teachers when the mandates (not lawful) were brought in, did they stand by their own colleagues?????

Wouldn’t give them the time of day.

  4. Homeschooling is sooooo much better…
Besides- these ‘teachers’ will be replaced by robots, A.I or both in the next 5-10 years, just like the Healthcare Sectors.
Better to stay at home and learn than to deal with programmed dysfunction.
Learn a trade that is indispensible…ie electrician, plumber, textiles, etc.
Grow your own food…drill a water bore…use solar and wind for your power…the possibilities are there.
Building a home? Put it underground away fro storm damage, war, and EMF radiation.

  5. We all know how this will end, with more teachers jumping the ditch to Australia. I see they have been advertising here for teachers to move to Victoria. Pay looks good, up to $113K + super.

    • That’s nearly 2x the starting salary in NZ, plus the cost of everything is considerably less in Australia.
New Zealand has priced itself out of reality. The wages do not reflect the cost of living there and the high prices – especially for real estate – makes NZ uncompetitive even for primary resources. A recipe for disaster.
