State-funded legacy media RNZ’s radio listenership has dropped to its lowest level in over five years, with the latest GFK data showing a cumulative audience of 467,700—down 4.5% since November 2024 and nearly 180,000 behind rival Newstalk ZB.
Once the market leader, RNZ now ranks eighth behind ZB and six music stations.
Its flagship Morning Report show has also hit a new low with 333,200 listeners, reversing its previous lead over ZB’s Mike Hosking Breakfast, which now leads by over 100,000.
Other RNZ programmes, including Nine to Noon, Checkpoint, and Saturday Morning, also saw significant declines.

Take the listenership numbers as an optimistic value, provided by 3rd party entities, whose existence depends somewhat on the relationship. For commercial stations the all important variable is the specific demographics, which links to advertising income, In RNZ’s case. being state funded, it does not require advertising income,. but does want the numbers to continue to justify milking the tax payer and to inject it’s left ideology propaganda. I’d surmise RNZ’s main demographic is likely boomers who are dropping from the perch, hence the ever diminishing share.
I do look forward to the demise of RNZ.

It is rare, but if I tune into RNZ, it is only to check and match up the propaganda and avoidance of truth. To see if they have changed their way.
