Stephen Stone’s lawyer calls for inquiry

Stephen Stone news

Stephen Stone, acquitted after nearly three decades in prison for the murder of Deane Fuller-Sandys and the rape and murder of Leah Stephens, is seeking a public inquiry into police conduct.

His lawyer, Annabel Maxwell-Scott, called the convictions a result of “reprehensible” police actions and claimed a false narrative had been imposed on the victims’ families.

She told media, that, “You’ve got four defendants wrongly convicted, and imprisoned in two cases, and you’ve got two families and their loved ones basically who’ve been given a completely false narrative.

“And you’ve got police conduct, which we say is reprehensible and engineered those convictions.”

While both police and the Independent Police Conduct Authority have launched reviews, ministers declined to comment on calls for an inquiry.

Stone also plans to pursue compensation, as police consider reopening the original homicide investigations.

  1. In a proper democracy, with an honest government and agencies, that would be a great idea, unfortunately this is New Zealand….

  2. As an ex cop myself….The NZ Police would have to be the F’k up fairies of worldwide law enforcement.!!! Without a shadow of a doubt.

  3. Should be standardised 1 million dollars per year with som of the money coming from anyone involved found guilty of wrong doing.
