Several war correspondents’ Telegram channels report that the missiles were unarmed, but contained one-ton warheads, making even such dummy missiles a formidable weapon at supersonic speeds of several Machs.

Experts estimate that impact with the ground at such speeds could cause an explosion with a combined yield of 7.5 tons of TNT (the equivalent of a small tactical nuclear weapon).

Regarding why it doesn’t have explosives: At speeds above Mach 5-6, the energy stored in the metal is greater than the explosives that can be packed into the warhead (at that speed, it’s no more than 25-30% of the total mass, to withstand the G-forces). Therefore, the use of explosives is pointless, and warhead production is simplified. During sudden deceleration, the warhead material heats up so much that it partially converts into plasma from this stored energy. Consequently, without any explosives, the result is an explosive effect, a fragmentation field of very high-speed droplets of material that act as micro-shaped-charge jets directed in the direction of flight. This provides enormous penetrating power.
