Three hikers have been found dead on Mt Baldy, one of Southern California’s most dangerous peaks, after a 19-year-old plunged about 500 feet while hiking near the Devil’s Backbone trail.

The teenager had been walking with a friend on 29 December, who escaped injury and was able to summon help after reaching cell reception, but rescuers later discovered two additional deceased hikers elsewhere on the mountain who were not connected to the initial incident.

Recovery efforts were delayed by high winds before crews retrieved the bodies, as authorities warned the mountain’s winter conditions can change rapidly despite clear skies.

Rising more than 3,000 metres and attracting both novice and experienced climbers due to its proximity to Los Angeles, Mt Baldy has claimed more than 14 lives since 2020, including actor Julian Sands.
