A 27-year-old woman appeared in North Shore District Court charged with ill-treatment or neglect of a child after allegedly placing a toddler in a closed suitcase on a bus travelling from Whangārei to Auckland.
The child, discovered during a stop in Kaiwaka after the bus driver noticed the suitcase moving, was reported to be very hot but otherwise unharmed and taken to hospital for assessment.
The charge sheet states the act could have caused suffocation, carbon monoxide poisoning, heat exhaustion, and psychological trauma.
The woman was granted interim name suppression, did not enter a plea, and is scheduled to reappear in court tomorrow. Police and Oranga Tamariki are continuing their investigation.
The court granted media permission to photograph the accused but only pixelated images of her could be published.
Acting Detective Inspector Simon Harrison, of Waitematā CIB, said the child is medically well and police are working with family and partner agencies to ensure the child is cared for.

How many more children are being stolen and trafficked this way? No one in their right mind would give up a child like this unless they have been hit with a dose of scopolamine or something.
