Internal messages released by US Senator Rand Paul have revealed that some of the scientists behind the influential 2020 paper dismissing a Covid-19 laboratory origin privately admitted they could no longer rule out a lab leak only months after publication.
The paper, published in Nature Medicine, concluded that a laboratory-based scenario was not plausible and instead argued the virus most likely emerged through a natural spillover from animals to humans.
However, private Slack messages and emails later showed growing uncertainty among the authors. Kristian Andersen, one of the paper’s lead authors, wrote in July 2020: “At the end of the day, we really don’t have any hard evidence one way or the other… we also can’t rule out that somebody actually put it in there.” He added: “Our paper was pretty strong in saying there’s no way, but I have less confidence in that statement at this stage.”
The released messages also indicate Andersen later questioned a key claim made in the paper about coronavirus research. He wrote: “We describe this in the paper and say that this work is performed ‘all over the world’, but that isn’t true – it has exclusively been going on at WIV.” He also acknowledged that new information had shifted his thinking, saying: “Given the data we had seen at the time of our writing, I was highly skewed towards ‘natural’. But with some of this new data… I’m moving much more towards the middle.”
Other communications revealed concern over the possibility of an accidental laboratory escape. Australian virologist Edward Holmes wrote in March 2021 that Wuhan Institute of Virology scientist Shi Zhengli “was very worried about a lab escape” and noted: “It clearly shows she found it a likely explanation.”
The lab-leak theory was widely dismissed as a “conspiracy theory” by legacy media and state “experts” during the early stages of the pandemic. It has since gained greater attention following investigations by intelligence agencies and public statements from senior US officials suggesting a laboratory origin remains a credible possibility. China has consistently denied that Covid-19 originated from the Wuhan Institute of Virology.
Commenting on the newly released documents, author Matt Ridley said they confirmed that the paper’s authors continued to believe a lab leak was possible after publication and questioned why the paper was never corrected or withdrawn. Senator Rand Paul accused the scientists of publicly attacking those who raised legitimate questions while privately expressing doubts about their own conclusions, saying the public deserved accountability for efforts to keep the true state of the evidence hidden.
The new synonym for such expertise is corruptness, criminality and evilness.
