A man in his 50s has died after collapsing while traversing the Tongariro Crossing around midday.
Despite the swift assistance of fellow walkers, including trained medical staff, resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful.
Police have expressed their gratitude to those who assisted and extended condolences to the man’s family.
The Tongariro Crossing is temporarily closed and is expected to reopen at 6am on Wednesday, 26 March.
The death has been referred to the Coroner.
