Trans woman ‘humiliated and deeply sad’ after being misgendered in Briscoes

Mary Haddock-Staniland news

Aucklander Mary Haddock-Staniland, felt ‘humiliated and deeply sad’ following an incident at a Briscoes store in Botany, where a staff member allegedly misgendered her.

During a visit to pick up a click-and-collect order, Haddock-Staniland approached an employee who couldn’t find her order and called over a supervisor. Despite showing her license and having the order in her name, the staff member repeatedly referred to her as ‘he’, a mistake not corrected by other employees involved in the conversation.

Haddock-Staniland lodged a formal complaint about the incident.

In response, a spokesperson for Briscoe Group, the parent company of Briscoes, stated that they prioritise positive and respectful customer interactions and apologized for the in-store incident. They did not comment further on the specific customer interaction for privacy reasons. The spokesperson also mentioned that Briscoe Group provides training on various topics, including customer service, product knowledge, and ‘diversity and inclusion’.

Haddock-Staniland shared her experience on her Instagram page, expressing the difficulty of speaking up but emphasising the importance of raising awareness about such issues. She also thanked her supporters for their ‘love and encouragement’.

  1. If you look like a man ,most will refer to a person that way. If one looks like a women once again people will refer to that individual that way. What is society to do call everyone ITS

  2. “…expressing the difficulty of speaking up”

Please. These creatures LIVE to “speak up” about it. Every excruciating waking moment of the day. On every possible platform in any way possible.

Someone needs to go home and shave

  3. That’s ‘It’s’ problem.
And IF such a creature were to stir up shit with me at the check-out till, I simply will not tolerate such woke crap hatefully directed at me or my family!

  4. Busy retail employees shouldn’t be expected to “read people’s minds” and instantly be able to discern that a person who looks like a man wishes to be referred to as a woman! Many people, myself included, feel sorry for these “trans” persons who are inflicted with gender dysphoria/gender identity disorder and other psychiatric illnesses, and we don’t mind addressing them with whatever are their currently preferred pronouns, just like we try to be kind to obviously emotionally disturbed strangers, or don’t mind obliging our daughters at play by referring to them as Princess Cinderella, if that’s what’s important to them at the moment, etc. But if trans people don’t look at all like someone of the sex they pretend to be, then don’t blame us for not being able intuit your wishes in order to go along with your pretense. YOU DON’T LOOK LIKE A PERSON OF THE SEX YOU WISH TO PRETEND TO BE. Why is that so hard to understand?

And once you’ve gotten tired of pretending you’re a woman and want to “detransition” back to a man, you won’t be able to blame us anymore for referring to you as a man. (You do understand the great numbers of trans people who, instead of committing suicide, end up detransitioning and reclaiming their authentic lives, correct?) The sooner you rise above your psychological illnesses, the better for everyone!
