Tropical low to bring heavy rain and strong winds – MetService

Severe weather is forecast to affect large parts of New Zealand from Wednesday as a tropical low approaches from the north, bringing heavy rain and strong easterly winds.

Orange Heavy Rain Warnings are in force for Northland, the Coromandel Peninsula, Bay of Plenty including Rotorua, and parts of Gisborne, with rainfall totals of up to 280mm expected in some areas and a high chance of escalation to Red Warnings.

Heavy Rain Watches cover Auckland, Waikato, Tasman, Nelson, Canterbury and Westland, while Strong Wind Watches are in place for Auckland, Great Barrier Island, Waikato, Coromandel, Waitomo and Taupo, where easterly winds may reach severe gale strength.



Authorities warn of flooding, slips, dangerous driving conditions and possible power outages, urging residents to stay informed, avoid unnecessary travel and prepare for rapid weather changes.
