The Trump administration has begun recalling more than two dozen career diplomats from ambassadorial and senior embassy roles around the world, as part of a broad shake-up aimed at realigning US foreign policy with President Donald Trump’s “America First” agenda.
According to reports citing State Department sources, ambassadors in at least 29 countries were notified last week that their postings would end in January, with Africa most heavily affected, followed by Asia, Europe, the Middle East and the Western Hemisphere.
While incoming presidents typically replace political appointees, the move has drawn attention because the diplomats involved are career Foreign Service officers, who are traditionally retained across administrations.
The State Department said the recalls were a standard process and stressed that ambassadors serve as the president’s personal representatives, giving him the authority to ensure they advance his policy priorities. The recall comes amid wider changes under Trump, including renewed diplomatic engagement with Moscow, efforts to mediate the Ukraine conflict, a tougher trade stance built around “reciprocal tariffs,” and a newly released National Security Strategy that marks a sharp departure from the Biden administration’s more interventionist approach in favor of a transactional focus on US national and regional interests.
