U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened to impose a sweeping 100% tariff on all Canadian goods if Ottawa finalises a trade agreement with China, warning on Truth Social that “if Canada makes a deal with China, it will immediately be hit with a 100% Tariff.”
Tensions have escalated following Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney’s recent engagement with Chinese President Xi Jinping and comments at the World Economic Forum (WEF) signalling a shift in Canada’s global trade posture.
Trump accused Carney—whom he again referred to as “Governor Carney”—of trying to turn Canada into a “drop off port” for Chinese goods entering the US, saying such a move would not be tolerated.
While it remains unclear whether Trump’s threat relates to a recently announced Canada–China agreement involving electric vehicles and agricultural tariffs, the remarks come amid broader strains in US-Canada relations, including existing US tariffs, Trump’s comments about Canada as a “51st state,” and Carney’s pushback that Canada “thrives because we are Canadians,” not because of the United States.
The US stands to loose too, it imports a lot of good into Canada including large quantites of fruit and vegetables over the Canadian winter. Suffice to say, Canada is seeing China as a beter trading partner and market, over the increaingly defunct USA.
