U.S. DOJ to investigate Black Lives Matter for fraud

US DOJ news

The U.S. Justice Department has launched a federal investigation into whether leaders of the Black Lives Matter Global Network Foundation and other affiliated organisations misused tens of millions of dollars in donations raised during the 2020 ‘racial justice protests’.

Federal agents have issued subpoenas and at least one search warrant as part of the probe, which began under the Biden administration and has since gained renewed attention under the Trump administration. The investigation, led by the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Los Angeles, seeks to determine if donors were defrauded, though no criminal charges have been filed.

The BLM foundation, which raised over $90 million following George Floyd’s murder, has long faced criticism for its financial transparency—especially after confirming a $6 million purchase of a Los Angeles property in 2022. Foundation leaders insist they are not targets of the investigation and remain committed to accountability.  Past state-level inquiries into BLM’s finances found no wrongdoing, and tax records show the foundation held $28 million in assets as of mid-2024.
