More than 130 UK military veterans remained on Shropshire’s social housing register while newly built homes in Stoke Heath were allocated to asylum seekers, prompting political criticism and community concern.
Twenty-one properties on the development were acquired by contractor Serco for asylum accommodation before the Government halted further placements following widespread opposition.
Shropshire Council said the decision was made by the Home Office and Serco, stressing it had objected to the plan and had raised its concerns directly with ministers. Veterans’ representatives, Reform UK and Conservative politicians argued that former service personnel should be prioritised for housing.
Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp described the policy as “a slap in the face to veterans who served our country and defended our freedoms,” while Reform UK’s Zia Yusuf called the situation “a national disgrace.” Local residents also criticised the proposal, citing pressure on the small rural community. The Home Office says new procedures now prevent asylum seekers from being housed in newly built residential developments.
