A search operation is currently in progress for a missing fishing boat off the coast of Gisborne.

The vessel carrying two individuals was expected to return around 4:50 PM but failed to arrive.

The Rescue Coordination Centre NZ (RCCNZ) is leading the search, which has been complicated by deteriorating weather conditions, including 4-metre swells and 20-knot northeast winds. Local resources, including Coastguard Gisborne, a helicopter, and various boats, have been deployed in the search effort, with a New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) P8 Poseidon aircraft also being brought in to assist with radar equipment.

The alert was raised when concerned contacts reported the overdue vessel to the police.

Despite efforts to communicate with the boat, no contact has been made since it departed this morning.

Gisborne Tatapouri Sports Fishing Club president Roger Faber, who was part of the fishing party on a separate boat, told legacy media he was concerned for the safety of the missing individuals. The local fishing community remains hopeful for the safe return of the boat and its crew.

  1. There was ample weather warnings beginning two days ago…
This is where the lack of planning and common sense comes into play; thinking only one-step ahead instead of 3-5 becomes a norm, with deadly consequences.
The over-confidence and ‘Shee’ll be right Mate’ in light of bad conditions is always seemingly present in these situations.
Some of the most dangerous waters in the world surround New Zealand, but despite this which warrants an extra excess of caution and pre-planning, proper responsibilities are ignored.
The end results are being constantly repeated, unfortunately.
